    Cash or Debit

    Sunday, January 20th, 2008

I still see people in checkout lines whipping out big chunks of cash to purchase items, where as I haven’t seen an actual dollar bill forever! I always use debit. But what are the benefits to using cash vs debit and do they outweigh the benefits of using debit?

    Benefits of using cash

    - Can only purchase what you’ve predetermined, i.e. if you don’t have the cash you can’t get it. This is useful if you’re on a tight budget

    Tax Windfall for Your Family?

    Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Bush announced yesterday his plan to back a bill that would put $145 billion into the Americans pockets to spend as they see fit. I won’t go into the polictical ramifications of that on here, nor my view of it, but if this goes through then it’ll end up meaning around $700 extra for a single filer or $1,500 extra for married filers.

Don’t know what to do with the windfall? Here’s some options:

    Shoot Me…and Other Stress Relievers

    Thursday, January 17th, 2008

I’m not sure if any of my readers know who this is, but it’s Starbuck off of Battlestar Galactica on the SciFi channel. Yep, I’m a huge fan of the show, and SciFi in general. I’m a geek, I know (I was a cheerleader once though so back off, I’m not a complete geek).

    Winner of the Previous Contest

    Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

I should have announced this yesterday, but the winner of the Similac beauty treatment was Jessnboys. So she got a voucher to get either a pedicure, a manicure or a facial (or whatever they offered for her). This contest was from the previous DNN website, she posted the most on the forums, so she was the lucky winner

She also gets a shout out:

Once the forums are looking decent on here, we’ll have another contest as well. Thanks everyone!

    Crayon Crafts for Valentines Day

    Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

This looked fun and cheap (I grabbed this from Thrifty Fun, but I read about it in Parents magazine yesterday as well)

    Drip Effect

    Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

The Drip Effect is the accumulation of all the purchases you make, the small ones at least, that add up to be huge amounts. An example I love to use is my husband eating at Burger King 5 times a week for lunch. Not only was it going to make his heart explode, but it was costing us over $1,800 a year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By us switching to him taking his lunches, we are saving over $1,500 a year on just his lunches.

The point is that a $6 meal doesn’t seem like much at the time, but (drip, drip, drip) it adds up to a huge amount over time.

    Warehouse Memberships

    Monday, January 14th, 2008

Just a few tips on warehouse memberships, like Sams Club or Costco…While you can do very good on prices at many of these places, you still need to be careful. I’ve found that I can do better at a grocery store when they have a sale, then when I go to Sams or Costco.

A great example is their canned vegetables. Here’s the scenerio:

Price Book for the Grocery Game

    Saturday, January 12th, 2008

This is as a follow up to a comment Steve made on the Grocery Game post about there not being a link to the Grocery Game website. http://easymoneysaving.blogspot.com/2008/01/playing-games.html

Well, there is actually a reason it’s not posted…I’m to cheap to pay someone for that so I developed my own.

The Grocery Game post explains the jist of the game, but that can’t be all. I developed a price book.

A price book is just a listing of all the prices of the products you buy at all the different stores. It has a few uses.
