Lasik in Children?

Lasik is a wonderful advance in technology to help people like me (20-700 vision). But is it right for children? There is a large debate in the vision community as to whether they should perform Lasik on kids or not.

While my first thought on this was "oh, how barbaric are you people, doing that to a kids eyes", there are actually some good reasons to perform lasik on children.

If you don't have vision problems, you probably will be just plain against this entirely, but if you indeed have lived with limited vision, you'll at least understand how rough it can be to live without good sight. In children, I'm not talking a 5 year old, but kids in highschool, it can correct their vision to almost perfect for the time they are in school. I read about a case where a kid had ADD and would lose his contacts all the time and his glasses. Getting him lasik helped with the frustration him and his parents were feeling surrounding the vision (and money) issue. For kids where nothing else works with vision correction, it could be an option.

There are many cons, such as your vision continues to change through your childhood years, so getting lasik may be an act in futility. Also, it's a drastic procedure, one not to be taken lightly at all. Scary is the word that comes to my mind! What do you think?

I had Lasik about 8 months

I had Lasik about 8 months ago and it was the best thing I've ever done... Scary? Absolutely... One of the most frightening things I've ever done... and I've done A LOT.

I would recommend it for any child above the age of 14 who is mentally able to recover and have it performed on them. While vision continues to change during childhood it also changes during adulthood... Severe or needed situations only for minors. It if turns into a vanity issue, that would be awful... It's bad enough teens are tanning, starving and wanting plastic surgery at an alarming rate...

Oh, and anyone looking to get this done, don't go discount... Lasik Plus is national and the best.

I never appreciated site so much in my life as I do now... Seeing the alarm clock in the morning, snorkeling in the Caribbean without contacts/glasses... Awesome...I wish now I could have had it available to me at a young age...
