Amazon Groceries
By Mommie | January 31, 2008
As a mom I’m always on the lookout for things to make my life easier. Amazon is now offering grocery shopping through their subscribe and save program, as I’m sure most of my computer savvy readers have seen. They claim to save the shopper 10-15% and you’ll never run out of items. They have free shipping as well…so what’s the catch?
I saw the catch right away, but many may not. Here’s an example. Annies Organic Mac and Cheese (12 pack) is part of this “subscribe and save” program. The price on Amazon is $40.08, but then they have it marked down to $28.63. And in regular Amazon style, they highlight the fact that you’re saving 29%. On top of that, this item is part of the “subscribe and save” program, so the final price you’d pay is $24.34.
The average Joe would say “WOW! That’s like a 40% savings, no way! Of course that’s a good deal.” Really it’s not. The price you’d end up paying is over $2 a box. You can get the same at Costco or Sams for just over $1 a box.
So what are you paying for? You’re paying for their “free shipping” and the convenience of having it delivered. In addition they don’t have the selection I would like to see.
This new type of shopping, grocery shopping online, is up and coming. I do think it will be the way people shop in the future, but as of now they aren’t up to my bar that I set.
