Awards Ceremony A Let Down
By Mommie | November 21, 2008
Yesterday my daughter had her first trimester awards ceremony at school. This was a kind of big deal because she was receiving two different awards. One for perfect attendance and one for a “Positive Office Referral”. The referral one is a huge deal because it recognizes the kid for doing something extraordinary, they get to go sit and talk with the principal and the principal calls the parents. Big deal for a first grader. So I made my way down to the school with expectations that my daughter would have her 30 seconds of fame…it didn’t quite happen that way.

They ended up having the ceremony with the kindergarteners and all of first grade, which my daughter didn’t think was too cool. Then all they did was call out all of the award winners names, all at once, and the kids stood up then sat down. Big let down to me, the expectant mom with a video camera in the corner. So many kids were called I couldn’t even film my daughters big smile. I wasn’t expecting them all to get Pinewood derby trophies or something, just give the kids a few seconds to have a moment all their own.
She didn’t know the difference, it was just me trying to live vicariously through her! But still, they could have tried something a little different for the kiddos.

It seems like so often teachers aren’t given time to do things they want to do at assemblies. I have had to do every assembly the same way…I call the kid’s names…they stand….they sit. We always seem to be on a time constraint. I would ask your daughter’s teacher or principal if you would take a picture with the adults, your daughter and the award/certificate. Then frame it for her wall.

My son was invited to a similar ceremony for Perfect attendance. It’s his first as he is in Kindergarten. The “ceremony” started at 6:30 pm, starting with a PTA meeting and then the awards for all the kids. I inquired ahead of time as to what would happen, same thing. They would call their name and have them stand up. We didn’t go. I wasn’t about to have the kids sit for 30 minutes through a PTA meeting just to stand and hear his name. Especially since 7:30 is bed time.

Awwwwwww, that’s just not right. Kids that age really thrive on that sort of attention and it really does help give them a sense of accomplishment. It also urges them on to continue the behavior. I’m sure your munchkins get that support at home anyway, but so many don’t.
