    Benefits of Baby Swim

    By Mommie | June 23, 2008

As we hit the true summer, I did what it seems all moms end up doing during the summer, I got my child into swim lessons. But, unlike having my kindergartner in them last year, the lessons are for my 14 mo old baby. So what good will it do for a baby to have “swim lessons”?

Funny as it may seem, there are benefits for both me and my baby. For the baby the benefits include:

    1. Introduction to water - He’s been in the pool before, but he was so small he honestly didn’t care. A bath is fun time for him, but it’s much different when the water isn’t that wonderful warm bath water. I’m hoping to get it so he’s ok with water and a pool atmosphere, as so many kids I see now a days are afraid of the water.

    2. Play - It’ll be good play time with him, just him and mommie! I’ve watched the class about 100 times when I was at the pool for my daughters swim lessons. They do try to have a lot of fun, and a chunk of their time is spent with just the parent and child bonding.

    3. There are numerous other benefits, including increased social, emotional and physical development.

What are the benefits for the parent? It’s hands on with your child, watching them learn and grow as you help them. It’s one on one time with your child.

We’ll see how it goes, as I’ve seen many kids scream for the first few sessions!

I just wish I could get my 18 month old in the water. She loves to take baths, but when it comes to anything larger than a tub, she clinches to my chest for dear life. Her brother on the other hand is more than ready for swim lessons, so I’m hoping that when she sees how much fun he’s having, she’ll want to join in. I’m looking forward to hearing more about how it goes. Looks like fun!
