Anyone who knows me personally knows that I’m not a huge girly girl. My daughter has definitely been into it but I’ve had to make efforts to aide her in the girly stuff. I’m much more at home playing with cars and dinosaurs! That being said, I’ve always had issues with getting our daughter the much coveted fashion dolls. These are the dolls put out that are Barbie like. Most of the reason that I have had issues with these is that they aren’t good role models for my daughter.
I’ve always tried to help my daughter become a strong girl. I want her to be herself, but not held back by thinking just because she’s a girl she can’t do certain things. I’ve tried to aim her toward positive role models, women who have made strides in society or just people in general who just work very hard and have good moral values. This isn’t always easy, especially when all my daughter wanted was Brats on year (I won’t have them in my home), or when Barbie came out with the same exact kind of doll as a Brat, but called it something else.
But I think I’ve found a set of dolls I can stand behind…
You’ve got to see this, this little boy wrote this book “How To Talk To Girls”. I just thought he was adorable. Although it’s a little disturbing that he’d write a book on dating at such a young age, it seems it’s a sign of the times…
I end up watching a decent amount of daytime TV now that I’m home, mostly it’s on in the background while I’m cleaning or cooking. I’ve been hearing more and more about the Jonas Brothers on daytime TV, it’s funny, they’ll just show up on the Today show and then they’ll be on Ellen, seems I can’t get away from them. My daughter has mentioned them, as her friends are all smitten, but my daughter doesn’t really watch the TV that would have her lusting after boys yet. That being said, these Jonas guys seem to be taking the world by storm! Read the rest of this entry »
Yesterday my daughter had her first trimester awards ceremony at school. This was a kind of big deal because she was receiving two different awards. One for perfect attendance and one for a “Positive Office Referral”. The referral one is a huge deal because it recognizes the kid for doing something extraordinary, they get to go sit and talk with the principal and the principal calls the parents. Big deal for a first grader. So I made my way down to the school with expectations that my daughter would have her 30 seconds of fame…it didn’t quite happen that way.
A new charter school has opened up by us, one that teaches everything to children using art and music. It’s said to be a phenomenal school. That being said, I was wondering how to interest my little ones in more art. Well, we’ll start with our home… Read the rest of this entry »
The LA Times had a good article about a seemingly disturbing trend in America, that’s the skipping or skimping of childrens health insurance due to the cost. It is true that many people have to make hard decisions when faced with the cost of not only their own health insurance, but that of all of their dependents as well. With an estimated 9 million children in the US without health insurance, it’s a sad fact to face that this trend is actually increasing… Read the rest of this entry »
With my son entering his second week with the same cold, and thus his second week of crankiness and the second week of my clothes being covered in kid snot, I thought I’d research why parents can no longer give kids under the age of 4 medicine. My daughter had the same cold and was over it in 2 days. I have her cold as well and it’s been just under a week for me, but I chalk that up to being pregnant. But what changed so that I can’t give my son medicine? Here’s what they’re saying… Read the rest of this entry »
It’s that time again Mommies! Time to drag your children in to get stabbed with a needle in the name of health. I already got my shot and so has my son. My husband and daughter are next in line. But I saw on the news tonight that New Jersey is making it mandatory for any child that goes to preschool or daycare receive the shot.
On one hand I can definitely say that when my daughter went to daycare she came back sick like 90% of the time. Those places are FILLED with sick kids it seems, and it’s just hard when one gets sick and spreads it to all the others. (I won’t get on my high horse here about parents who drop off sick kids at daycare instead of keeping them home, it would be to long of a post). So I can see the benefit of making these kids get flu shots. I honestly don’t see much difference between that and requiring your child to be vaccinated before going to school, but many do.
On the other hand, I hate when people are told “you must do this or else”. It sure feels like some freedom is being stripped from us.

There hits a stage in every little girls life when they stop being a little toddler girl and grow up to be a big girl. One of the best way to signify this to a young girl is to change her bedroom to reflect that. With our daughter we made many improvements, including her bedding, her bed, the color of her room and all of the fixtures in her room. So does this really signify anything to a young girl? This year our daughter had her first fundraiser, it was selling Gold C and Entertainment books. Her school is very lucky, as we live in a fairly well off neighborhood and the families give heavily to the surrounding schools. So when they have a fundraiser they have specific needs to achieve. This one was actually a “fun” fundraiser with the funds use being determined by each classroom. But things are changing in the fund raising world. Here’s how…
