    Do You Really Need It?

    By Mommie | August 29, 2008

I did a post quite a while back on things that you need, or on the contrary, don’t need when you’re having a baby.  There are many ways to decrease the amount spent on the incoming baby, many of which are common sense.  Here’s another list of some of the things you don’t really need and some that I personally can’t live without…

You can find gadgets for everything these days, especially for your baby, but it doesn’t mean you need them. A few that I just think are rather silly are the “Pee Pee Tee Pee’s”. These are little tents you put over your sons pee pee when you’re changing him so he doesn’t pee on you. Now someone is making a fortune on these but they don’t need to make a fortune off of you.

Crib toys are another one. Honestly, our child is in his crib to sleep, not play. We had an aquarium for him, which just kept him awake. We also had a iCrib, which we somewhat liked but I don’t think our baby cared. These are things you get at baby showers which just end up collecting dust.

One thing that we were told not to get was a changing table. I mean, you really can just change the baby on the floor, there’s nothing wrong with that. But we got a changing table when we bought all of our baby furniture. Honestly, I don’t think I could live without it. The one in the picture is just like the one we have, you can find it on sale at Buy.com for a fairly decent price. Let me just say that it saves your back and I use it numerous times each day (as I change the baby on it).

Just use common sense when selecting baby products. Here’s an example… I made all of our sons baby food, so I needed a baby food grinder. If you’re not going to make food for your baby and take the Gerber route, you probably don’t need one and it’ll be a waste of money. Just think if you’d really use it or not. I was so scared when we had our son because of how terribly expensive everyone said babies were. Ya know what, it’s really not that bad. Diapers are our biggest expense, but honestly I now worry more about the cost of replacing all of the things that our son is destroying! (Maybe that’s why people say they are so expensive?)
