EU Trying To Extend Maternity Leave

    By Mommie | October 3, 2008

    belly

In a benchmark move, the European Union has proposed to extend maternity leave to 18 weeks plus 100% sick leave! If passed, this would encompass 27 nations within the European Union.

This is amazing to me, as I had to claw and scratch for a month and a half, then had to take basically no pay for another 6 weeks.

What do you think of this? Do you think it will ever spread to the US?!?

Amazing most other countries have paid maternity leave except the US and Australia. that is Shameful as I believe should be a right, after all we all pay taxes and live in a Western Society. Obviously our respective governments do not place a high priority on the new generation. Simply by not following suit to the European Community and other countries less fortunate (they too have paid maternity/paternity leave!)

Oh, I hope so, I always cringe a little when I hear how little time you guys get in the states! Here in Canada the gov’t gives us 55% of our wage for a year, and a lot of companies will ‘top up’ your wage to %100 (providing you return to work with them). I think we’re very, very lucky but I agree it should be more common.
