Forced Flu Shots
By Mommie | October 17, 2008

It’s that time again Mommies! Time to drag your children in to get stabbed with a needle in the name of health. I already got my shot and so has my son. My husband and daughter are next in line. But I saw on the news tonight that New Jersey is making it mandatory for any child that goes to preschool or daycare receive the shot.
On one hand I can definitely say that when my daughter went to daycare she came back sick like 90% of the time. Those places are FILLED with sick kids it seems, and it’s just hard when one gets sick and spreads it to all the others. (I won’t get on my high horse here about parents who drop off sick kids at daycare instead of keeping them home, it would be to long of a post). So I can see the benefit of making these kids get flu shots. I honestly don’t see much difference between that and requiring your child to be vaccinated before going to school, but many do.
On the other hand, I hate when people are told “you must do this or else”. It sure feels like some freedom is being stripped from us.
What do you think?

I used to work in a daycare and I wish it had been required for the kids to get flu shots. It was terrible how many parents would bring there kids sick, wanting us to dope them up on medicine.. Anyway.. I get the not being told what to do but all in all its best for everyone’s health. I agree with what you said, its no different than the other required vaccinations.
By the way, thanks for having my Entrecard add today!

I was surprised to see that young children are given flu innoculations. In Britain usually the over 60’s are offered them or those with asthma or serious lung infections but the rest of the population don’t receive them.
Does it make a difference? Do they actually work? Is influensza rife where you live? It is pretty rare over here - there are quite a few strains of colds but flu is very rare.
I have only had it once in my lifetime. I never want it again - but I’m not sure if I would willingly have a jab for it as I would need to be convinced it would do any good as it is viral and thus it changes from person to person. I have to confess going back my parents both had flu jabs and they were so ill afterwards with the most horrendous colds that were both head and chest colds and were ill over the whole of the winter. This really put me off …… so - I would really need to be convinced.
I hope that the jabs have worked well for you.
I’m sticking with my old fashioned anti-bacterial honey at present … may be I’ll change my mind at some point in the future but my spoon of honey each day will have to do for the moment I think.
At least it’s sweet.

Ya, the flu season can get pretty bad here in the states. It shoots through the schools fast enough. If you’ve had the flu then you know how bad it could be. The last time I had it I was out of work for an entire week, my fever was so high it was crazy. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. It supposedly works to get the shot, I’ve had the flu shot every year and I’ve only had the flu once. Maybe those are good stats…maybe not!

I run a daycare and I cannot tell you how often parents bring their kids with symptoms and say that they were ‘fine’ when they left the house and to call if they get worse. The problem with that, is if the child is sick, they are already contagious. I even have one parent that insists that giving children ‘any’ medication before the age of 4, is very bad for them. So no flu shots, not baby Tylenol. Nothing.
I am for flu shots! I cannot take a day off to be sick. I don’t like to be told what to do either, but I would rather know that my kids have less of a chance to get sick.

No shot (again) for me this year. Bring on that bug.
x will probably not give the shot to the kids.
I have not seen the kids in over 2 years (because x is insane and about to lose custody) so I have no control of that situation
