Frugal Holidays - Week of October 18th

    By Mommie | October 18, 2008

Well, this week we’ll talk about one very important way to cut costs this holiday season.  I understand that little Susie wants a Cabbage Patch Doll, but do you buy to first doll you find or do you comparison shop?  This is a good example of everyone faces during the holiday season, so let’s cover how to get through it without spending a fortune!

Let’s just work on the Cabbage Patch Baby that was in the example. You know you’ll need to buy one and it’s October. You have time to cut your costs. There’s a few ways to do it.

First off you’ll want to get online and find the base price for one of these dolls. There are many comparison shopping sites that will help you do this. The one I used came back with the price being around $19.99 for the doll. So here are your hints:

    - Look at the adds every week, and I mean every week. Toys go on sale constantly during the holiday season, so keep a look out.

    - The site I used came back with the cheapest doll being off Ebay. Since you have time, try your hand at bidding on an item. You may be surprised at how cheap you can get it for.

    - Look for online coupons. Many stores have online sales that they don’t have in the stores, take advantage of these savings. You can also look for coupon codes and printable coupons to help you on your quest.

    - Always look at shipping costs. It may be cheaper in price, but it all might be made up on the back end in freight.

    - Always look for related products, like baby doll accessories, which may be on sale as well. It’s a time to stock up for the gift you’re buying.

I know it’s not always easy to pass up the gift while you’re in the store for something else, but in the long run it will pay off. Just do your homework first!
