    Healthy Mommies

    By Mommie | July 16, 2008

While I’m not always the best at this (I definitely have my Krispy Kreme moments), I sure do try to be as healthy as I can. I try to do this not only for me, but for my kids too. I was watching a program about a couple that had three very overweight children. Both the mom and dad were normal size, but their children were insanely obese. It floored me to listen to the mom explain how she purchased food and how she fed her kids. Here’s what I’ve found out in the time I’ve been a parent…

    1. Your kids eat what you give them (at least when they are little). If you only have chips and ice cream in the house, that’s what they’ll eat. If you only have healthy food in the house, guess what, that’s what they’ll eat.

    2. Lead by example. If I eat all my broccoli, it’s a good chance that my daughter will finish her’s as well. I eat what I take, and that almost always includes a vegetable.

    3. You want your kids to exercise more? You better be up to the task. Studies show that if you exercise with your children, they are more likely to continue a healthy lifestyle as adults. If I want my daughter to get some exercise, I better be ready to strap on my rollerblades and keep up.

    4. Hide the good stuff. I do it all the time. Check out my Sneaky Puree post to get some good hints. I not only hide the food for my family, I hide it for myself. This morning I had a banana in my protein shake and I flat out HATE bananas. BUT, they are good for you…

I like to quote my pediatrician who told me “You’re not their friend, your their mother”. And while I’ll have a chance to be their friend later on down the line, right now they need to be guided on a few things. I’d rather pay attention to what I eat then to where I can find cheap Phentermine in order to stay in shape.

And one last thing, it’s ok to have some bad stuff every once and a while. It’s the only way I stay sane. I have an addiction to Jolly Ranchers, I can sit down with a bag and eat the whole thing in about half hour. While that’s not healthy, the occasional trip to Dairy Queen can do wonders!

How parents can allow their children to get so overweight like that!
I lead by example even though my kids don’t follow. Sensory issues really get in their way of eating most foods so it makes it harder. However I refuse to give up. Vegies will always end up on their plates. I also make shakes for them that happen to have fruit in them and they have no idea. And the vegies are always mixed in with a food that I know they will eat! So even though they won’t eat a green bean or a grape…they still are!
