Is It To Early For A Pumpkin?

    By User ImageMommie | October 7, 2008

Every store, every farm has their pumpkin sales operating at full capacity. Last weekend we saw about 4 pumpkin patches packed with people. My daughter keeps begging for a pumpkin, but I remember when I gave in and we got pumpkins early. They were rotten, and those things smell I tell you, by Halloween. So when should you buy a pumpkin for Halloween?

Well, no matter what, it’s definitely to soon to carve a pumpkin. Pumpkins usually 2 days to 1 week, depending on the outside temperature. Pretty much you have to carve the pumpkin right before Halloween or the pumpkin starts to shrivel up and then smell.

But you actually can buy a pumpkin this early and wait to carve it. If kept in a cool, dry environment, a pumpkin can last 2-3 months. This is, of course, without any penetration of the skin. If that happens, your pumpkin will pretty much rot.

So go out and get that huge pumpkin, just tell the kiddos they’ll have to wait until closer to All Hallows Eve!
