Lighting Dilema
December 1st, 2008 by Mommie

lights

Well, we got all of our Christmas decorations basically up. But I’ve discovered that my husband and I seem to be at odds with the lights inside the home. He wants our Christmas tree on all the time, I figure we should turn it off if no one is in the room to see…so who is right?

Honestly our indoor lighting debate covers more than just the Christmas tree. I always turn off lights that aren’t in use. I think my parents must have taught me that or something. My husband, on the other hand, got upset last night when I turned the hallway light off, as he said he would need to see to walk through the hall later. Um, we’ve lived in that house for a while, I think he can find his way with limited light, he doesn’t need the hallway light on.

But the Christmas tree is a different matter. He’s been pushing to get the LED Christmas lights. I know, they’re brighter, they use less electricity, I understand all of that. It’s the initial outlay of money that I just can’t seem to handle. Therefore we still don’t have LED lights and we have the old regular lights. They are definitely not as energy efficient as the LED’s, therefore it just backs up my view that they should be turned off when no one is looking at them.

Then again, it is Christmas time. The kids love them, they give off a warm glow when you enter the room. So who is right in this little debate? Let me know your views!

I say have them on if you’re home and in the room enjoying them, or at least in and out of the room. But when everyone’s gone for the day, or in bed for the night, shut those babies off. No sense in paying for the energy that noone is enjoying.

I like conservation, so I am a big fan of turning off the lights when you are not using them. We have a remote control so no one needs to crawl under the tree to turn it off and on. Good luck!

Well, if for no other reason that they could cause a fire, I would definitely turn them off when no one is home. At least if you are home and something sparks, you could call the fire department before the whole house is engulfed.

I’m all for keeping them on while at home, I turn my on when I get up and don’t turn them off until I go to bed when I am home. But they go off if nobody is home.

We have the Christmas tree lights on when we are home in the evening. Check out the LED lights after Christmas on sale.

It’s nice to keep them on while your there to enjoy them. But dangerous to keep them on all the time. It can cause fires, esp. with a real tree.

Hi Mommie! I agree with you that it’s best to turn the lights off when no one is in the room to enjoy them. But I DO leave them on all day when I’m home on the weekends. I just love seeing Christmas lights! :)
