McDonalds and Labor
By Mommie | July 28, 2008

I thought I’d share one of my pregnancy stories from when I was pregnant with my son. I don’t know what made me think of this today, but it made me laugh, so I figured I’d make you laugh too (or cry). It’s a story about McDonalds and how scary a pregnant woman really can be…
I was in labor with my son for days, although I didn’t quite know it was labor. We kept going to the hospital and they kept sending us home, the way it normally goes. I was 38 weeks, so I had a little while to go. Well, my contractions were picking up but we didn’t want to go to the hospital, so we did what everyone tells you to do, we decided to eat and wait as long as we could before going back to the hospital. I can’t remember why I went to go get it and not my husband, or why McDonalds (as I hate their food), but there I was, in my car going to McDonalds at about 8pm one night with my baby trying to claw his way out of my stomach.
I decided to go through the drive thru, there didn’t seem to be many cars. There were two cars in front of me and one of them was ordering. The pain was increasing, but it was ok. I figured I’d get the food quickly and run home, I mean it usually takes them like 45 seconds to get food out that stupid little window, so I’d be good.
The car in front of me ordered, then me. I only ordered two big mac meals, one for me and one for my husband. I pulled up into my waiting spot and did just that, wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. 15 minutes had passed, there were still 2 cars in front of me waiting for their food. My contractions were again giving me quite some pain.
I start getting mad, throwing things around in my car, cussing at nothing in particular, yelling at the car in front of me (not his fault obviously). And wait. And wait.
So finally I pull out of line and park the car. Get my big ol’ belly out from behind the steering wheel and march my big ‘ol self into the restaurant. There is not one person in there, not one. People are behind the counter laughing and talking with one another, but not working.
I walk up to the counter and say “excuse me”, as I cringe behind a contraction. No response. Did they not hear me? I’m loud even when I’m trying to be quiet, they must have heard me. Another contraction and then I yell at the top of my lungs “HELLO! I NEED MY FOOD NOW!”. So some 16 year old girl comes to the counter and says “How can I help you”. I explained to her that I’ve been sitting in their drive thru line for about 1/2 and hour and I need my food now.
She said my order would be up soon. I just looked at her and said “Unless you want me to have my son on the floor right here, you’ll give me my food now. I’m in labor and I need it now.” I didn’t say it nicely, I said it with a tone that would scare anyone, including myself. The look on her face was pure horror. Suddenly I was shoved two bags of food and she said, “No charge, I’m so sorry for the delay”.
I grabbed the food and hobbled out the door.
I’ve always wondered what the kids in that McDonalds must have thought. Maybe it was good birth control for them for that day:-) Moral of the story, well, there’s a few. Never stand between a pregnant woman and her food, don’t ever keep a pregnant woman waiting and if you’re in the path of a pregnant woman’s wrath, just submit and give her whatever she wants as fast as you can!

I don’t know how you managed to be that calm. I would have had a COW - not a baby if that happened to me, and I’m not pregnant!

This made my day! Thanks for sharing your labor experience at McDonald’s. I can only imagine the horror of the people inside the store. Good for them!
I just have to say though that you were brave to still drive with those contractions. I also remember getting sent back home when the docs saw I was only doing 2cm. I did the whole labor thing the rest of the day back home.

I’d have given you whatever you wanted too. What a story. Did you eat and then go to the hospital? Thanks for making me laugh out loud.

This is one scary story. I dare not to go alone especially during contraction period. You must be one daring women. I love to see the look on the McD girl when you screw her.

That is a scary, funny story. I think I will start carrying a pillow in the car for dealing with slow drive thrus.

That is too funny! I had a similar labor with Isaac that lasted days on end. I don’t recall taking that out on anyone other than Shaun.
BTW - I tagged you!

This reminds me of my mother - when she was in labor with me, she *insisted* that my father drive 1/2 an hour out of there way (en route to the hospital) to get her favorite ice cream!
I, by contrast, had to be induced with my son or else I’m convinced he never would have been born
