Modern Camping
By Mommie | June 25, 2008
When I was growing up, my parents took us camping a lot. Living in beautiful Colorado, you pretty much have to go camping or they kick you out of the state! So yesterday the hubby and I purchased a tent and all the stuff to go along with camping out. But guess what…unless you reserved a spot last year, you’re not going to find a camping spot this year!
We were very excited to start being “that family”, you know, the ones that go camping with their 2.5 kids, the dog, they hike and fish and roast marshmallows and sing around the camp fire. But when I got online to find a camping site, every campsite was pretty much booked. Not just for this weekend, until past Labor Day. Are you serious? I can’t take my kids camping unless I plan it out a year ahead of time? That’s insane. What happened to pitching a tent at the best campsite, the one with just a fire pit and that’s it?
Not anymore ladies and gentleman. Now you have a picnic table at each campsite, a fire pit, the option of electricity or wifi, bathrooms nearby, showers, even small stores. I remember camping and we had NONE of that stuff, just our tent, sleeping bags and a cooler.
So what options do we have? We absolutely have the option of just driving up to the mountains and finding a first come, first serve camping site. The downfall to this…what if we don’t find one. Our 14 month old has the patience of a gnat, so I’m pretty sure us driving around just hoping to stumble upon a campsite won’t be acceptable to him, not to mention my husband. We’re not looking for a site like something next to the Outer Banks, just a nice spot with some trees where we can’t see our neighbors!
Well, here’s to camping in the great Colorado wilderness!

You could try Big Elk Meadows. It’s a beauitful area where you can camp where you please. I used to go 4 wheelin’ there quite often. The only downfall I could see is that since you don’t have a 4×4 vehicle you wouldn’t be able to have your car right by your campsite. So trekking to the campsite with your gear and 2 kids may not be so fun.
