No More Breasts
By Mommie | February 9, 2008
Well I have them, but my baby is done with them. After a wonderful 10 month breastfeeding experience, he’s ready to end it and finally so am I. But since cow’s milk is a no-no until the age of one, what is a breastfeeding mother to do?
Many breastfed babies will take a bottle and ours was no exception. Then came the day he got a little cold and I breastfed him exclusively (skipping the one breast milk bottle he had a day)so he could get any antibodies he needed to fight the cold. The cold lasted two weeks and by the end of that time, he refused the bottle and has refused it ever since.
Slowly, but surely he has decreased his feedings as his solid food intake has increased. In step, milk supply decreased to match his needs. Now he’s down to just a tiny bit a day, and biting with his six teeth the whole way. But he still needs milk so what are the options?
1. Sippy Cup - While I am not partial to sippy cups, as I recall how hard it was to break our daughter of it, I must face the fact that a sippy cup will now be part of my life for quite a while. Our son can’t drink out of one yet, as he can’t suck out the liquid, but I’m hopeful. I have been taking the stopper out and basically pouring it into his mouth, although I sure do hope he catches on soon.
2. Straw - I’ve heard this method works well if you can teach your child to suck through a straw. Again, we’ll work on this to.
3. No more bottle - It’s been recommended by our pediatrician not to reintroduce the bottle, as this is about the time you start to wean them anyhow.
4. Put it in his food - increase the amount of liquid in his food. At least he’ll get some liquid that way.
5. Formula - all of this will have to be done with formula. After months of pumping, night after night, freezing hundreds and hundreds of ounces of milk, my supply is to where it wouldn’t be beneficial to pump. And do I want to increase my supply? Nope, not anymore. As I said before, he’s done and so am I.
Sadly, I’ll miss it. My little baby is growing up! Now if I can just get the kid to say MaMa instead of DaDa, life will be grand!!!![]()
