    Protection From The Big Break

    By Mommie | November 7, 2008

I’ve been doing some looking into how to protect your mattress in case your water breaks during the night. With my son, the thought honestly never occurred to me. It wouldn’t break anywhere but the hospital, right:-) In fact they broke my water at the hospital. But I’ve been reading that with your second it breaks more often at home. So what do you do to protect your mattress investment from that gush of fluid?

There’s a few things you can do to protect your mattress:

    1. Buy a water proof mattress pad - While this is probably the most logical, we have the biggest pillow top king size bed on the planet and silly mattress pads will cost about $30. Plus, I’m not sure I want one on our bed for all times.

    2. Use a crib mattress pad right under where you sleep - You’ll need this anyways when the baby is born, might as well use it now.

    3. Wear incontinence pads to bed - Thinking no on this one, that doesn’t sound fun at all.

    4. Put a shower liner under where you sleep - Sounds like overkill to me, but it’s probably due to work fine

    5. They have special pads just for that, they remind me of puppy training pads.

So what should a woman do instead of just hope it doesn’t break in bed? The decision is yours, and mine hasn’t been made yet. Let me know what you did, if anything!

I bought a waterproof mattress pad. I spent the money on one that would stay on the bed all the time. It was really soft and had a latex like liner instead of the uncomfortable, noisy plastic ones. I brought it from the mattress store for about $99. I loved it and it was worth every penny. Much cheaper than replacing a mattress. I would definitely put one the bed. My water broke while I was sleeping with my second child with no labor beforehand to warn me. I lived to far away from the hospital to have time to do anything but jump in the car. 2 days later we returned home and it smelled like something died (gross I know) If I hadn’t had a waterproof cover on the bed it would have been ruined.

GREAT POST! I am pregnant with my second. I too did not even think about it my first. With this one I am worried about it. I have been looking at Protect-a-bed products. Expensive but we have an expensive matress and I would rather protect the matress! Now I could use a new chair at work so water breaking there could be a good thing!

My water broke at home with my first child and it happened in the middle of the night - I woke up to use the bathroom and when I got out of bed my water broke. So, maybe it won’t happen when you’re lying down. With my other 5 kids it had to be done at the hospital. But if you are worried about it you can just use a plastic sheet, or what I would do is buy a matress topper, you know the 2-3 inch soft comfortable mini-mattress things you can set on top of your mattress, then if something happens you could just throw it away.
