Stop Breastfeeding, Stop The Calorie Burn
By Mommie | March 12, 2008
Breastfeeding is a wonderful thing. Your baby gets the perfect food and nutrition source, the mommy gets her muscles back into shape quicker and of course, there’s the 300-500 caloric burn a day that it gives the mother’s body just for producing the milk. So when you stop breastfeeding, where does that leave the mom? Will you gain some weight back?
I’ve been extremely lucky with breastfeeding, going 10 1/2 months with my son. I lost almost all the weight I gained (almost 60 pounds) within 6 months. I do attribute a lot of that weight loss to breastfeeding, as I don’t workout or eat crazy diet food. I’m now below my prepregnancy weight and quite happy about it. But I am afraid to gain, now that breastfeeding is done.
How to keep it off? Well, it’s simple caloric intake ladies. If your body isn’t burning those calories anymore, you probably have to adjust your intake. (I switched from straight ice cream to sherbet, does that count?) Either that or increase the amount of calories you burn in other ways, such as including exercise in your everyday routine.
As the days become much warmer, I get at least one hour of walking in a day. I walk my daughter to school and back, in addition to trying to make it around the lake by our house at least once a day, all this while pushing the 20lb baby. Is it going to keep the weight off? Beats me, but it makes me feel great and I know it’s burning more calories than if I didn’t walk at all.
The one thing I will miss is the ability to eat anything I want, with the justification that the calories will be burned off by breastfeeding. Oh well, guess I’ll make myself a salad…![]()

When I am breastfeeding, I can eat just about what I want without gaining any weight. When I stop breastfeeding, watch out! It’s one of the great benefits to breastfeeding. Thanks for sharing.
