    Sweetest Story I’ve Ever Heard

    By Mommie | October 16, 2008

    old couple

I was up at a retreat in the mountains this weekend and I had a chance to talk to the owner of the ranch my friends and I were on. He was 92 years old. I sat and talked with him for about an hour and a half. I thought I’d recount the story a little.

Almost immediately he told me that he had lost his wife about 6 years ago. But I was amazed with the way he spoke of his wife. He was so sweet. They had been married for 65 years and he said that they never fought once. He told me the secret to having a happy marriage was never going to bed angry. I asked him if he could talk to my husband a little (lol), to which he replied “It wasn’t me, I would go to bed mad if it were left up to me, my wife was the one that made sure we didn’t”.

While talking with him he used terms like “angel” and “soul of gold” to describe her. He was beaming when he told me the story of how he asked her out for the first time when they were in college. I was touched, truly touched at the amount of love this man had for his wife, even after she had passed years before.

Later I talked to his son, in his 50’s or 60’s. He said that since his mother died his father had been lost, that she was his whole life. It was sad to hear, he is such a wonderful man with a wonderful family. At their ranch they were surrounded by four generations of children, laughter and togetherness.

I thought I’d share, as I can only hope my marriage will be as fruitful.
