Teaching Through Art
By Mommie | November 13, 2008

A new charter school has opened up by us, one that teaches everything to children using art and music. It’s said to be a phenomenal school. That being said, I was wondering how to interest my little ones in more art. Well, we’ll start with our home…
The picture above is one of my favorite pieces in our home (one of our only as well). It’s called The Scream, by Edvard Munch out of Norway. I bought one of these canvas art prints when I purchased my house. It always goes in our computer room where I can see it. There’s a reason why I bought it too! During grad school I was very busy, too much so. Working full time, going to school full time, trying to start a family, buying a house, a car, you name it. The picture depicted on the wall reflects how I feel at numerous times throughout my days.
That being said, I asked my six year old what she thought of the picture, and it was quite interesting. She saw the two men in the background and she said the guy was scared of them because they looked like bad guys. She also mentioned him being at the beach and wearing black (to hot obviously).
So just that one piece of art can not only help teach our children about color and interpretation, but they can teach us too. I had never even seen that there were two other men in the picture, and I look at it almost everyday! Children can be our teachers, just as well as we can be theirs!
