    Their Scale Must Be Broken

    By Mommie | November 10, 2008

I had another prenatal appointment today. They had to hook me up to the baby heart monitor machine, as the baby’s heartbeat was dipping during last months ultrasound. I guess all is well, as the doctor says that it looks like a healthy baby boy. I was relieved and happy.

And then I asked the fatal question… “How’s my weight doing?”. See, I must explain that this was a “substitute” doctor, as mine just had a baby. She doesn’t know me, or my sense of humor or what I’m sensitive towards. My weight is one of those issues that my regular doctor would have dealt with in a much different manner…

Because I’m short and have a little frame, they only want about a 25 lb weight gain. Ya, as of today, I’m at 21 pounds. So great, I have 4 pounds to play with for the next 16 WEEKS!!! That’s never going to fly! I wasn’t to happy with it, but of course I’m responsible for it. With my son I gained about 35 pounds as I recall, but I didn’t care. It came off pretty fast.

But, as a great Leo, I’ve got a plan. I’m going to start walking again (even though I live in Colorado and it’s November), cut out my evening snack :-( , and do either the Wii Fit or Yoga once a day. With the holidays coming, I think there is no way I’ll be able to drop weight, but maybe I’ll break even! I eat ok still, although the Halloween candy definitely had it’s way with me!

I’ll keep you updated on my progress!

Just so you know, 25 lbs is an arbitrary number, there really is no “correct” amount. I gained 85 lbs with my son, lost it all. Currently I am 35 weeks and have gained about 45 lbs, I am 5′5. the body really doesn’t produce babies bigger than you can handle - there are a lot of birth myths out there - with some exceptions (including change in environment/diet, and hormonal / medical issues).
I worked in pediatric physical therapy and amazingly the children with the most problems / hypertonic, etc. came from these anorexic looking mothers who gained only 15 lbs during pregnancy - I assume lack of nutrients can contribute to this.

As a labor coach I would say, smile, relax and don’t sweat the small stuff. I don’t do regular weigh ins because I have issues with body image and weight, I do blind ones where I don’t ask, they don’t tell.

I gained about 55 lbs with my pregnancy so I’d say you were doing good! I still have 10 lbs to lose and it’s been 12 mos.
