To Sling or Not To Sling

    By Mommie | September 19, 2008

When I finally had my son, I liked the idea of having him near me all the time. I got a carrier and walked around with him in the front carrier until he was about 20 pounds. That’s about when slings got crazy popular. I saw a lady wearing one the other day and I swear she had it on wrong, but her child looked fairly comfortable. So what are the advantages of a sling?sling

    - One big advantage is that you can breastfeed your baby discretely. I would love to be able to use this for that purpose, as I was so pro-breast feeding with my son.

    - You can multitask, as your arms are free to do more.

    - I’ve read that it reduces colic, which I’m not sure about. But I know what it’s like to have a colicky baby and I’ll do anything if it’ll help!

    - Promotes bonding, as your basically attached to your child. It also eases transition out of the womb, as the baby can still hear your heartbeat.

So with baby slings being the new thing, I think the fact that I could breast feed while moving will be my biggest motivator to getting one. With a toddler running rampant, I’m going to need to move quickly, even when I’m giving the baby his afternoon snack!!

I’m a man so I don’t know anything about breast feeding, but there are times when my daughter likes being in a sling and there are times when she seems to hate it.

She is one month old so we haven’t been out and about with the sling, but it may come in handy. Which one do you have? There seem to be a lot of different kinds and I’m not sure ours is the best or easiest to use.

I spent a ton of money on a Baby Bjorn carrier when my daughter was born and I only used it a couple of times. That was before slings were all the rage. I’m definitely going to try one for my next child.

A sling is a great pregnant women should check them out for when they have their new baby.

I currently have a front carrier, the buckle in kind. I haven’t gotten a sling yet, but I sure plan to for ease of feeding. There are so many kinds, but I’m always scared I’ll tie it wrong or something and then whoop….there goes the baby… but they are in fact very safe.

Hi! I LOVED my sling — I was so sad when my kids were to old to “sling” in the store and such… made everything so much easier. :-)
