One thing I did love about being pregnant was being able to go to some great prenatal yoga classes. I went once a week for most of my second trimester, and a little of my first. But I do recall walking into a room full of VERY pregnant women while I was only 10 weeks along. It was uncomfortable, as if people were waiting for me to have a miscarriage or something. So when is the right time to start a prenatal yoga program?
Since there are few restrictions to your workout routine in early pregnancy, yoga is 100% acceptable in your first trimester. You are able to do poses that your soon to bloom belly won’t allow you to do in a few months, so take advantage of that.
If you were like me, it was good to start out early, as I had never done yoga before. I was able to learn my poses and balance, all without a belly to impede me. By the time my belly got big enough, I had been to enough classes to know what to do and what not to do when it came to prenatal yoga. In addition, I had a certified instructor, and they know exactly what you should and shouldn’t do at each point in your pregnancy.
By the time I hit my third trimester, I couldn’t really walk to well. I ended up doing a prenatal yoga tape at home. This worked great, I could do this after my daughter went to bed and it would help stretch me out in order to sleep well that night.
Personally, I felt weird without a belly in a prenatal class, and I understood why as I saw girls come in there and suddenly they weren’t there anymore. It always made me wonder if something bad happened. If I’m blessed with another pregnancy, you can be assured that I’ll be back in that prenatal yoga class though!
